The Faculty of Social Sciences is a vivid social scientific entity which unites health sociology and social sciences in the same faculty. This means the faculty has expertise in qualitative research methodology, health sociology, public and global health, gender research, and cultural and political sociology.
The faculty includes the Research Centre for Knowledge, Science, Technology and Innovation Studies (TaSTI). TaSTI is the largest research hub for science and technology studies in Finland with about 30-40 researchers. It is the home base for the Aaltonen Foundation research project Health, knowledge and expertise: The criticism of biomedicine related to complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) and vaccines in Finland. This project combines sociological and historical perspectives to study the use of CAM and vaccine-criticism, responding to the social and political need to understand these phenomena and the criticism of biomedical expertise in general as processes that are deeply historical and cultural.
